We have been contacted by several patients to enquire about changes to GP appointments at Forton Medical Centre. Please find below a brief update:
We have been experiencing problems finding GPs to come and work in our practices, due to a lack of GPs across the country. This means that our GPs often work alone at a site, which causes additional strain on the doctors and limits the services we can offer. Over the last few months we have been working with our Patient Participation group (PPG) to look at the options we have to make sure you can access a GP appointment when you need it.
We are currently looking to move routine GP appointments and the GPs based at Forton Medical Centre to our other three surgery sites at Stoke Road Medical Centre, Waterside Medical Centre and Brune Medical Centre.
Forton Medical Centre will continue to be part of the Willow Group Practice, but it will be used as our base for Long Term Condition patients (conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and respiratory issues). These clinics will be led by our Advanced Nurse Specialists working alongside a range of health professionals. Forton Medical Centre currently has approximately 4,000 patients with long term conditions. These currently take up a large number of routine GP appointments. This move will free up routine GP appointments, increasing the amount of appointments we can provide across the three sites.
We know some patients may have exceptional medical circumstances meaning they cannot get to another site. For these patients we will put on a limited number of pre-booked routine GP appointments at Forton Medical Centre. Access to these appointments will be assessed on a case by case basis by a nurse or doctor. Housebound patients will be seen in the usual way by phoning through to your surgery. There are no plans to change our urgent same day GP appointments, which will continue to run at Gosport War Memorial Hospital.
We are currently writing to all our patients based at Forton Medical Centre with further details of our plans. These should be with patients next week. If you have any feedback on our plans, please let us know via email@example.com or by using the feedback boxes based in the surgery.
